The Trouble with Maggie Cole was a British comedy-drama television series directed by Ben Gregor and written by Mark Brotherhood. Premiering in 2020 on ITV, it featured Dawn French in the role of Maggie, along with Mark Heap, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Vicki Pepperdine, Patrick Robinson, Emily Reid, and Gwyneth Keyworth.
The six-part series unfolds in the coastal village of Thurlbury, centering around the energetic local, Maggie Cole (Dawn French). Maggie, who humorously dubs herself the “local historian,” manages the community’s heritage/gift shop, while her husband Peter serves as the headmaster of the local primary school.
Maggie, in a moment of self-importance and under the influence, spills intriguing details about six village characters on the local radio. The revelations lead her into a web of guilt over her inadvertent gossip. Surprisingly, her drunken confessions appear to have touched on truths about at least two or three individuals, setting the stage for inevitable confrontations and reckonings
The series was filmed on location across South Devon and Cornwall, with a primary focus on the village of Noss Mayo near Plymouth. Totom was responsible for constructing the composite set for the interior of Maggie’s house in a barn in Devon.
