Where Prop Making Meets Scenery Construction

The big advantage of using a scenery construction company for prop making is the natural overlap between the two skillsets. Add to that a workshop equipped with the machinery and tech typically used in set builds, and you’ve got the perfect environment for tackling a wide range of prop briefs.

Whether it’s replicating antique furniture, creating a futuristic item from scratch, or making something that’s built to break, we approach every prop making brief with a deep understanding of both material and purpose. A working knowledge of materials is essential, but so too is the practical ability to build the item safely, efficiently, and true to the original design. Our years of experience span wood, metal, polystyrene, CNC machining, vacuum forming and more.

But before that…​

Where does a prop build start?

The answer is the starting place varies from project-to-project. At Totom we understand that production schedules, evolving briefs and the source of inspiration for prop requests varies. To make it easy we are happy to start with a drawing, design file, reference photo or even a sample that needs replicating in multiple. Sometimes we’re sent a basic sketch, other times a mood board or a detailed 3D model. From there, our team may develop a SketchUp model, adding technical detail to support the build process.

Our team assesses the brief and selects the right materials for the job. We consider not only the look and function but also practical factors such as weight, durability, transport, and budget. Once the method and material are confirmed, the prop moves into the workshop for build.
