This England

“This England,” formerly known as “This Sceptered Isle,” is an original factual drama produced by Sky. The series delves into the turbulent period during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the experiences of the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the British government, and the nation as a whole.

It made its debut on Sky Atlantic and Now on September 28, 2022, featuring Kenneth Branagh in the role of Boris Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond portraying Carrie Symonds.

The series opened with Boris Johnson’s 2019 victory in the general election, succeeding Theresa May as Prime Minister. The Conservative Party, after navigating challenges like David Cameron’s resignation and an unsatisfactory tenure under May’s leadership, had high hopes for a fresh start. However, the Brexit agreements unraveled, and the COVID-19 pandemic struck the UK. “This England” follows Boris Johnson’s journey through these critical events.

The series consists of six episodes, and it boasts remarkable transformations by some renowned actors. Sir Kenneth Branagh undergoes a striking metamorphosis to portray Boris Johnson, thanks to the use of makeup and prosthetics. The cast also includes Ophelia Lovibond as Carrie Symonds (later Johnson), Andrew Buchan as Matt Hancock, Tim Goodman as Stanley Johnson, and Alec Nicholls as Sir Patrick Vallance.

“This England” was filmed in various locations throughout Norfolk, featuring places like Wolterton Hall, Aylsham Market Place, and the Church of St Michael. Wolterton Hall, an elegant 18th-century mansion, was redressed to depict portions of 10 Downing Street within the series. It also served as a stand-in for Chevening House, a private government residence similar to Chequers. Boris Johnson’s private flat scenes were shot in an existing residential location in London.

The expansive and intricately designed set, exclusively built by Totom Construction, was erected in Raynham Hangar’s 50,000-square-foot Studio. Unfortunately, this studio has since closed down. The set included a complete replica of both 10 and 11 Downing Street, a 2 story composite set, encompassing both the upper and lower floors, complete with the iconic main staircase.
