Joan: Supplying Scenic Elements for ITV’s Retro Drama

For ITV’s mini-series Joan, we supported the production by providing scenic elements that helped bring the 1980s setting to life. Rather than building full sets, we supplied scenic elements that the onsite construction team, led by Construction Manager Hugo Slight, could efficiently assemble. This approach streamlined the production process, minimizing studio time and ensuring the crew had exactly what they needed on schedule.

Our work included scenic elements for the hair salon and jeweller’s shop sets, capturing the distinctive retro look of the era. The hair salon, named “New Waves” in the show, was actually installed in an empty shop in Walsall (near Birmingham) but is set in Islington, London. The jeweller’s shop set featured warm wood-panelled walls, highlighting the brown-dominated palette that defined 1980s design. Together, these elements contributed to an immersive setting, enhancing Joan’s visual narrative and authentically capturing the essence of the time.
