SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
Totom is dedicated to facilitating each production company with their ALBERT INITIATIVE requirements. We can confirm that:-
1. Our softwood timber and MDF boarding is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) wood, harvested from a renewable plantation source.
Our softwood and hardwood ply board is Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) wood, harvested and manufactured in Malaysia, a more sustainable source than South American woods.
We choose chipboard whenever we can – as it is 70% recycled wood.
We are mindful of using materials sparingly – i.e. tailoring design to sheet sizes.
We keep a record of the amount of timber used for each job.
We use at least 97% non-toxic water based paint.
We use any surplus paint for base coating.
We keep a record of how much paint we use for each job.
2. We repurpose elements of sets, to use on future builds – we keep stock sized flattage, chipboard flooring, braces, architectural pieces, doors & windows and door furniture.
3. We dispose of our sets with Hawes Waste Management, where the load is separated and sorted :-
Wood is chipped into a biomass boiler or sent to manufacture chipboard.
Metal is taken off for smelting.
Plastics / acrylics are made into pellets for melting and reuse.
Carpets / rubber are shredded for reuse on equestrian surfaces.
We have recently installed a furnace in the workshop, so that we can use all our wood offcuts to heat the building.
It is state of the art wood waste technology; a low carbon heating solution, swapping from fossil fuel. It also reduces the overall amount of wood that is sent to Hawes Waste Management for recycling.
